The best place to run around Atlanta is "The River", aka the Chattahoochee River. Park at the Cochran Shoals parking lot, right off of 285 and head north on wide flat dirt trails. If you just run the main loop it will be 5k. We've included an out and back along Columns Drive, a scenic paved road along the river.

Sope Creek

Most people stick to the groomed paths along the Chattahoochee but the more adventurous seek out the fun, technical, single track trails just off the beaten path. You can pick any of the trails that branch off the 5k loop and head uphill into the lush forests of the Sope Creek area.

Within the city of Atlanta, the most popular place to run is Piedmont Park. The "Central Park" of Atlanta offers amenities such as a half-mile gravel running track, public restrooms, drinking fountains, and a restaurant - Park Tavern. Our route takes a 5K tour of the park on paved paths.

Kennesaw Mountain

Kennesaw Mountain Park, or "Kemo" to the locals, offers a hilly, wilderness, trail running experience just north of Atlanta. A combination of wide gravel paths and single-track meander through the woods and over huge slabs of granite. The park is a civil war battleground so you’ll see several historic markers as you travel along the trail. Drinking fountains are also found a few places on the trail and there are restrooms at the start of our route, at the Visitor Center. Be careful when the trails cross the road a few times.

Stone Mountain

20 miles east of Atlanta lies a massive dome of granite called Stone Mountain. Runners flock here to tackle the 670-foot ascent straight up the rock face. The park also features five and eight mile road loops or a single-track trail around the perimeter of the mountain. This route follows the trail loop and finishes with a mountain summit.

Silver Comet Trail

On the northwest side of town the Silver Comet Trail cannot be beat for running, cycling, and walking. The paved rails-to-trails path extends all the way from Smyrna to the Alabama state line and beyond for a total of 95 miles! There is a parking lot at the Mavell Road trailhead where we start our run. Turn around at the intersection of S. Hurt Rd. for a 10K run or keep running as long as you like.

Atlanta BeltLine

The completed Eastside section of the Atlanta BeltLine Trail is a popular place to run in town. While running this flat, paved, multi-use path you won't see any cars but you will enjoy an urban adventure with great views of the Midtown skyline and rotating art installations along the way. You can extend the run if you like onto the future pathways, which are still dirt trails.

Chastain Park

Chastain Park offers a peaceful paved loop around a golf course in the beautiful neighborhoods of Buckhead. Lots of people come to Chastain to run and exercise along the shaded paths. Plenty of streetlights make this a good place to run after dark.

Roswell Riverwalk

The peaceful Roswell Riverwalk trail follows alongside the shaded Chattahoochee River, between Riverside Road and the river. The pathway varies between paved and smooth gravel as you travel this flat route through the upscale neighborhoods of Roswell. At times the path disappears leaving you to run along the shoulder of the road so please pay attention to traffic. Towards the end of the route we make a slight detour down the quiet gravel Old Riverside Road. There are no restrooms or drinking water along this route.

Freedom Park Trail

The Freedom Park Trail's ribbon of pavement provides a hilly route, off city streets, near downtown Atlanta. Heading eastward the trail eventually becomes the PATH Stone Mountain Trail that can take you all the way from downtown to Stone Mountain for a total of 17 miles one-way. Our route starts at Candler Park, which features a golf course and public pool. Heading east from here the Freedom Park Trail winds through more parks and green spaces and past the Jimmy Carter Library. We turn back just before the Highland Avenue overpass but there are many ways to extend this run through the adjacent parks if you like.
