A microcosm of a national shift, Berlin cycling is a mix between the old school “no water for the first 50k” and a growing community of youthful adventurers and ex-pats. Winters are rough and the wind can be challenging. Upside: Pre and post-ride coffee is a respected ritual.

Schönefeld Loop

The “Crown of the East” (die Ostkrone) alongside the A113 is the fastest (and nicest) way into Berlin’s southeast and the surrounding area. Traffic congestion will only decrease with every mile you put between you and city center. The loop around the Schoenfeld Airfield is always special, but it can be very exposed to the wind. Find your perfect coffee spot on the way back into the city, either in gritty Kreuzberg or in a chic place back in the center of town.

This route combines plenty of highlights in the Berlin area. From the center, head out across the Tempelhof Airfield and do an extra loop up and down the old runways before heading further south the escape the noise of the city. Things will quiet down quickly until you reach the halfway point of the ride at the Trebbin Natural Reserve. On the way back into town, enjoy beautiful Grunewald and all of its lakes and endless woods. NDuro Life Cafe is a popular spot for local cyclists as it offers a great selection of mid-ride snacks.

This is an ideal weekend spin with friends. The Oderbruch offers a welcome change of scenery compared to the Berlin flats. Moderate hills allow riders to collect a few extra meters of altitude and you can easily expand the loop before turning around in Orderberg and the Oderberg Lake. The area to the northeast is sparsely populated, so there shouldn't be much traffic.

Havel Loop is a quick, southbound escape via the picturesque town of Caputh. There are plenty of ways to extend the route; catch a ferry across the Havel for 1€ only to land in Werder, where you will find endless bike tracks into Brandenburg.

The Werbelinsee lays in the middle of the Schorfheide: a natural reserve with plenty of terrain for cyclists to play. The loop around the lake offers plenty of photo opportunities, food stops, and thanks to a bike-track on the busier west side of the lake, a relaxed vibe. Bring your swimsuit in the summer to cool off in the lake before returning into Berlin.
