Melbourne Running Guide

The running scene here is social and diverse: No shortage of running clubs and meet-ups, even in boiling hot summer, and runs range from the big hills of the Dandenongs to flat beaches.

  1. The Tan

    • Distance 2.5 mi
    • Elevation 208 ft

    Melbourne’s most popular running route, ‘The Tan’ lap is 3.827km around and suited for runners of all abilities. The majority of the track is gravel, Anderson Street the only exception. Check out the list of Top 10 male and female fastest times recorded on the pillar at the horseshoe start and don’t forget to stop in and enjoy a coffee at one of the cafes along Domain Road once you’re done. The Tan is incorporated into many of Melbourne's biggest running events, and is also 网上理财项目home to numerous running & exercise clubs.

  2. Albert Park Loop

    • Distance 3.0 mi
    • Elevation 26 ft

    The Albert Park Lake running track is a 4.7km track not far from the heart of Melbourne that loops this famous lake following the same course as the Formula One racing track. The track is well maintained and the course is almost perfectly flat from start to finish. Beautiful views across the lake make this a very enjoyable run but be sure to watch out for swans who frequently wander across the track!

  3. Yarra Trails

    • Distance 7.5 mi
    • Elevation 628 ft

    The Yarra Trails provide some great trail running opportunities surprisingly close to the CBD. A number of challenging hills and a variety of different surfaces make this a great area for cross country runners in particular.

  4. 1,000 Steps Run

    • Distance 1.0 mi
    • Elevation 945 ft

    The Thousand Steps is a challenging hill climb at the base of the scenic Dandenong Ranges. The severity of the incline makes successfully walking the trail a more common goal than running it. Try and enjoy the views on your way up!

  5. Capital City Trail

    • Distance 6.7 mi
    • Elevation 537 ft

    A shared use path for both runners and cyclists, The Capital City Trail is conveniently located and full of options. Following the Yarra River and connecting with plenty of trails, runners can see a heap of Melbourne on foot. Great for both locals and tourists alike, this easy to access trail makes for a great out and back or an epic loop.

  6. Fitzroy Gardens + MCG

    • Distance 2.6 mi
    • Elevation 304 ft

    Close to the Central Business District, this convenient route offers an escape from the city hustle. Starting in Yarra Park and looping through the Fitzroy Gardens, runners will be surrounded by green trees and glide past the famous MCG.

  7. Beach Road

    • Distance 13.2 mi
    • Elevation 772 ft

    Arguably the most iconic road in Melbourne, Beach Road is popular with both runners and cyclists and it's easy to see why. Kilometers of smooth pavement hug the coastline and if you feel like stopping for a post run brekky, there are plenty of fantastic options.

  8. Maribyrnong River Loop

    • Distance 2.5 mi
    • Elevation 80 ft

    The Maribyrnong River loop is situated in the heart of Aberfeldie and runs just over 4km in length. The popular location is a fantastic area for those who are looking to get a bit of exercise in, before heading to any number of popular cafes for a coffee and something to eat. The track itself is great for people of all abilities, as it has both a footpath and grass for those looking to exercise on softer terrain. It is also popular for those wishing to increase the distance in their workload, as the paths continue much further on.
